East 17's Tony Mortimer has revealed that he was shocked to hear Girls Aloud had covered 'Stay Another Day'. He was surprised to see that the girls had given the song a romantic slant, considering the song was written about his brother's suicide. Mortimer said: "I found it really odd they were singing a song about my dead brother. It should've been left alone for a few years. I love Girls Aloud, although I prefer to watch them rather than listen to them. If we ever do a big tour they'd be the first band I'd ask to come on the road with us." The big word in this is "If". E17 can't even fill up a small bar nowadays. Definitely not wise to stay another day, yah?

Franz Ferdinand is taking a break after playing a couple of UK music fests this summer. Alex Kapranos said, "We have been on the road or in the studio continuously for three years and I think everyone needs to spend some time with their wives or their girlfriends and live a bit of an ordinary life again." It would be better, as this will help them write for the third album. He added, "I feel that if I kept this life on the road and nothing else then I'd have nothing to write about because I would only have this to draw on - and that's a pretty vacuous subject." Quite true. Would much prefer if they produce another epic just like the first installment.

Barenaked Ladies and Broken Social Scene says 'No' to downloading lawsuits. Some of the proposals being floated could make it illegal to share music online, leading to lawsuits which the musicians called 'destructive and hypocritical'. "For a very long time we, as artists, have allowed industry groups to speak on our behalf. We want that time to stop," Steven Page of the Barenaked Ladies said at a news conference. Canadian Music Creators Coalition also rejects the idea of digital locks that would restrict how a digital song is used. For example, some locks prevent a song from being copied onto multiple music players. Page said, "we would rather see our fans in concert than in court." He advocated working with fans and finding other ways of being compensated for the music his band creates such as collecting levies from blank media - something Canada already adds to the price of blank CDs. "We cannot afford to have an adversarial relationship with our fans. New technology affords fans new ways to listen to music. We as artists must adapt to that," he said. Broken Social Scene member Jason Collett credited his band's international success to the Internet. "The time and place of a band like Broken Social Scene historically could not have happened without being facilitated by this radical new technology," he said.
